friends1.gif (65195 bytes)

Over 850 participants attended the 1998 Women’s Health Summit: "Achieving Mental Wellness Throughout Life" at the Doubletree Hotel at Post Oak on October 15, 1998. Once again, the program was a sell-out. Nationally and internationally renowned speakers gave presentations on dealing with the stress and anxiety, coping with depression and loss, normal aging vs. dementia, and improving your memory.

Jehan Sadat, former first lady of Egypt and international humanitarian, served as the keynote speaker during the luncheon. Reeve Lindbergh, daughter of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, along with the Honorable Roy M. Huffington presented Madame Sadat with the annual Anne Morrow Lindbergh Award for Aging with Grace and Distinction.

Additionally, Margaret Alkek, Belle Johnson and Eleanor McCollum were given The Sprit of Anne Marrow Lindbergh Award for their lifelong, valuable contributions to the Houston community.

Reeve Lindbergh autographed copies of her new bestseller book, Under A Wing, which recounts life with her famous parents. Additional copies are available for sale at the HCOA office.

Corporate sponsors included Methodist Healthcare System, Belmont Village Assisted Living Communities, Eli Lilly & Company, Garden Terrace Alzheimer’s Center of Houston, ManorCare Health Services/Arden Courts, Novo Nordisk A/S, NYLCare Health Plans of the Gulf Coast, Women’s Health Boutique, Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the members of the Advisory Committee - Lavonne Cox, Maxine Hammonds-Smith, Betty Jukes (Luncheon Chair), Barbara King, Susenne Telage, Cameron Vann, and Marian Yeager-Enete whose valuable efforts during the past year helped make the 1998 program a success.

1999 WHS Equally Successful

The 1999 Women's Health Summit entitled Cancer Prevention: Knowledge is Power was held on November 2-3, 1999 at the Omni Houston Hotel. Melinda Berkman chaired the summit along with Suzanne McCrary who served as the co-chair. Over 550 participants attended the two-day summit, which began with a fundraising luncheon featuring Countess Patricia Mountbatten. The Countess was presented with the Anne Morrow Lindbergh Award for Aging with Grace and Distinction for her lifelong humanitarian and philanthropic work.

During her keynote address, Countess Mountbatten recounted both the joys and trials of her fascinating life. At the age of 70, the Countess continues to lead an active life. She truly believes that age should not be a factor in roles that people take on in life. Her favorite aging axiom is a French saying that women are either "quite young, not quite so young or quite wonderful."

Colletta McMillian, Cynthia Woods Mitchell and Margaret Alkek Williams  were presented the Spirit of Anne Morrow Lindbergh Award for their valuable contributions to the Houston community throughout their lives.

The second day of the summit featured three outstanding clinicians who gave presentations on the three leading causes of cancer death in women --breast, lung and colorectal cancer. Dr. Marian Yeager-Enete, a longstanding supporter of the Huffington Center on Aging and a member of the Center's Development Board served as the program moderator. The presenters included Dr. Jose Guillem with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Dr. Worta McCaskill-Stevens with the National Cancer Institute in Maryland and Dr. Katherine Pisters with The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. The program participants really enjoyed the breakthrough information discussed by these exceptional speakers.

Corporate sponsors included the Hackett Family Foundation, Methodist Health Care System, Houston Chronicle, Uncle Ben's, Inc., Alterra Clare
Bridge-Medical Center and Westchase, Compass Bank, Garden Terrace
Alzheimer's Center of Houston, Neiman Marcus, Novo Nordisk A/S, and
Galloway Florist, Inc. The educational forum was in part supported by the
Isla Carroll Friendship Trust.
