Diet

Sodium restriction is generally a 3 gram sodium diet, (although a 4 gram sodium diet is acceptable). Have the patient or the person doing the cooking see a dietician! Anything less is suboptimal!

Fluids may have to be restricted on occasion or if hyponatremia is also present.

Sodium and fluid restriction can lead to volume depletion. The older patient is quite susceptible to hypotension because of age-related changes, sodium and fluid restriction, and concomitant use of drugs which have the side effect of hypotension. Remember that older patients have poor sympathetic nervous system function and therefore can't compensate well for hypotension!
