Jim Seigler

You just never know where you're going to find some talented older person whose passion is painting. Many have been artists all their lives, others have just begun, and they live in your neighborhood. I had never heard of Mr. Seigler until I got a phone call from his wife. Mrs. Seigler had attended a Baylor Ten Luncheon meeting at the River Oaks Country Club where our director, Robert J. Luchi, M.D., presented a powerpoint   update on aging. Following Dr. Luchi's talk, he distributed our 1998 Arts in Aging Calendar, which can be viewed by clicking here; Mrs. Seigler loved our calendar and called to tell me about her husband's beautiful work. Voilą!

Jim Seigler is a native of South Carolina. He attended the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, Georgia and holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. After graduating, Jim designed sets and costumes for the famed Ringling Brothers' and Barnum and Bailey Circus. This experience exposed him to strong color and figure movement, influences that remain in his work to this day. His paintings have been exhibited throughout the U.S. and have earned many awards. He has lived in Houston since 1969 where he is a vice president for Foley's Department Stores.

When I first saw Mr. Seigler's work, I liked it immensely. And since nearly all the slides I viewed were paintings of people he had observed in his many travels around the world, I thought he's the first older artist we will feature in this new piece. Still painting and exhibiting his work in the seventh decade of his life, Jim Seigler is showing us the way to successful aging. So enjoy.
