Texas Geriatrics Interest Foundation

The Texas Geriatrics Interest Foundation (TGIF) is a joint organization of medical students interested in geriatrics and aging at Baylor College of Medicine and at The University of Texas Medical School, both of which are located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.

TGIF is a student chapter affiliated with the American Geriatrics Society. Current and future medical students can learn more about geriatrics as a professional career choice and about the care of older people by visiting the Huffington Center on Aging website (www.hcoa.org). The TGIF section of the website provides students with the following: 1) Basic information on the field of Geriatrics and it’s importance to the future of health care; 2) Interviews with leading geriatricians involved in different aspects of elder care; 3) Pathways to graduate training in Geriatrics; 4) Resources available to students interested in research, clinical experiences, community service opportunities and scholarships to pursue further training in Geriatrics; and, 5) Links to interesting Aging websites.

Annually, TGIF student officers organize the following activities with the help of faculty members and staff from the two medical schools:

"Hot Topic" Lecture Series (typically 8 per academic year, held at noon)

Community Service Activity (typically 1-2 ongoing activities, i.e. "Food for Seniors Program" via the Houston Food Bank)

Socials with Geriatrics Faculty & Fellows (Fall and Spring)

Shadow A Geriatrician Program (available throughout the year)

AFAR Geriatrics Scholarship Program (National Competition)

In addition, student members of TGIF now have the option of pursuing longitudinal training by electing to participate in the Geriatrics Track option throughout their medical school training.

For additional information regarding TGIF, please contact Elisabeth Pous, epous@bcm.edu, or 713-794-7153.
